In 1944, Julien Quentin attends a boarding school run by friars near Paris. One day, a new student arrives: Jean Bonnet. In spite of the war and bombings going on, the fear and suspicion surrounding them, the two boys try to live a normal life, finally learning to know and appreciate one another. The story is based on a childhood memory of film director Louis Malle.
